Listening to Penny is very enlightening. Such a simple concept yet many would not think to take advantage of the networking potential of social media. Potentially, Facebook can be like walking into a room full of pro’s in your field!

I agree with your comment meenleob about testimonials. I work in a profession where people in management who want to move on, receive a good reference just to ensure that they leave the work place they are currently in because of the terrible job they have done. Facebook can be shallow, but you don’t have to accept a friend invite! You can make your account as superficial as you want.

some wise words – I like Penny’s idea of treating people online as you would in the real world. Must admit I am not keen on online relationships (facebook et al) as feel they allow relationships to be incredibly shallow and exist when they probably would have no basis to in the real world. Not sure about her ‘testimonials’ comment – anyone can ask another person to provide a testimonal for them … doesn’t mean it is genuine and I think people need to be more aware of this.

I agree with you Andre. I have had a number of my connections on social networks write me testimonials when I haven’t even been in contact with them… I really don’t value them that highly now. Mostly I’d prefer to go on recommendations.

I’ve watched a few interviews with Penny and she is just so knowledgable and passionate about what she does. We need more people like that in the world!

The one thing the professional journo’s do have in their favour is contacts and a press card ;-)

The problem many of them have it that you can get away with poorly thought out garbage in the papers, but not in a blog when your audience probably knows more about the topic than you do…

Case in point is football, where you have a journo, who maybe takes in 20 or so games from any one team in a year, versus fans who may attend 60+ matches, and watch games 2-3 times on DVR…. The standard of coverage from those sorts of bloggers is actually far higher than what you’ll find on the Guardian.

I personally always look for testimonials and comments other people have made on their blogs etc before i even contemplating connecting with someone

It does look like a great chair doesn’t it?? As for your genuine testimony debate businesstvAndre, do you think that some people have the idea that controversy causes debate, debate (even negative) is advertising?

A woman who really understands about networking both online and off – known by many as the mother of networking she was a visionary and pioneer when she founded Ecademy over 10 years ago.

hah she does have a great name.. I hadn’t really thought about writing testimonials for people because I don’t really like when people ask me to write a testimonial for them. I do agree with the fact that we do need to find friendship from these profiles and connect with people as we would face to face and be totally honest.. nothing worse than fake profiles!

She has a great name! To be honest social networking to me is not far of stalking! She is good in the video though
