Many parents choose to “friend” their child to monitor activities but the problem with this lies in the fact that parents have no idea what goes on in private messaging or in areas for which kids don’t allow parents access. On August 23, AOL released a new tool to help parents monitor children’s social networking activities, giving reports of what the child is doing and alerting parents of red flags to things like signs that the child is in a potential child-predator situation, contemplating suicide, cyber bullying, or drug and alcohol use. Instead of the slinking around and ransacking children’s computers, parents can be upfront about the fact that social networking is going to be monitored. However, once it’s in place, parents can review postings, photos posted by the child, and photos in which the child is “tagged” uploaded by others to check for inappropriate behavior. click here to read more

With the recent news of Google’s plans to create a social networking site that could rival Facebook , many people have wondered how any site could overthrow the social-media giant. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Google is talking to several top online game developers about creating a broader social networking site that would offer social games and could compete with Facebook. When Ryan Khuri, 21, a junior majoring in English/philosophy at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, joined Facebook, he saw it as “the simple alternative to MySpace. Although he deleted his Facebook account a few years ago to help prevent his spending too much time on his computer, he said, one thing that would make Facebook more appealing to him is to simplify it. If Walters’ and other college students’ irritation at the games on Facebook is any indication, Google probably shouldn’t count on the gaming aspect of its social networking site to win over Facebook users. click here to read more

Four panel members from very different social media backgrounds, ranging from one whose company blocks social media unless approved by management to one who counsels businesses on avoiding lawsuits stemming from social media, came together to discuss how social media is rapidly changing the business world. Held at NW Natural, it not only addressed how to use social media to grow your business, but also what pitfalls to avoid. The panel discussed the ways that social media can both help and hinder businesses. Since “technology is changing faster than the law,” said Karr, companies are struggling with companywide policies to deal with social media. The panelists explained that we may not even notice the “I accept this site’s terms of use” that we check when we sign up for social media, but when designing social media policies for a business, it is important to read these terms. In all, social media is a powerful tool to help your company, but be smart about the risks. click here to read more

The simple analogy for how we often used to collaborate with colleagues was a more sophisticated version of telephone, the children’s game in which everyone sits in a circle and one person whispers something into the ear of the person sitting next to him and that person whispers what he hears to the next person, all the way around the circle. We were using PowerPoint and e-mail, but it was typically limited to knowing only who was the best person to contact for the necessary information or insight. Realizing we needed to enable communication across the function to develop a marketing standard of excellence, we tried to build a platform of our own last year. A quick post on MarkNet returned insight and follow-ups from businesses as varied as GE Capital and GE Healthcare and as far away as Germany and Russia. MarkNet allows executives to become experts in something new by allowing them to engage partners all over the world, and has in a very short time turned our marketing department into a much closer-knit community. click here to read more
